Review of The Karate Kid (1984) by Patrick L — 14 Oct 2010
The first in the series of films with some obscure connection with DC Comics. A Caucasian boy and his mom leave their hometown and travel west until they arrive in "the land of promise". He makes friends with a popular girl, makes enemies with her ex-boyfriend and his friends and finds a mentor in an older Asian male. The elder teaches him the ways of karate in a mysterious way, giving him discipline and patience and helping him to realize his dreams.
I've got all of the Karate Kid films on dvd and watched the first three just recently. I saw the first one in theatres I think or maybe I rented it. It's a film that still holds up well and is a classic in its own right. I like that the rich girl who likes the new kid is pretty smart and tough and that she doesn't play the fool for anyone. Is there anyone like her out there? ;-).
