Review of The Karate Kid (1984) by Anssi V — 10 Oct 2011

An excellent film and well worth its hype. The plot is good, the characters are good, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) is pure gold and the pacing is just right. There's a lot of training and martial arts in this film, but it's blanaced with a credible story and characters that feel real enough that we care about them.

Sure the villains of this film are a bit two-dimensional and there are few moments when the suspension of disbelief is kind of hard to maintain. ("Wax on, wax off" is a brilliant line, but seriously.

.. Karate through simple manual labour? Why the world isn't full of ass-kicking janitors?) Still, the movie is an enjoyable experience and it feels nice to watch. There isn't a clear reason why this one is so good, but I guess it because there isn't any great flaws in it.

So yeah, I liked. Although, the movie ended quite abruptly, which always annoys me.
