Review of The Karate Kid (1984) by Sean S — 09 Nov 2012
The original and best, this underdog tale in the style of director John G. Avildsen's previous winner Rocky is still enjoyable close to 30 years after its making. Ralph Macchio stars in his career-defining role as Daniel LaRusso, who has moved from New Jersey to California and meets Mr.
Miyagi (played in faux-Japanese-accented English by Pat Morita), an elderly and wise Japanese man who lives in his apartment block. Cue karate teaching, inspirational quotes and LaRusso running into trouble after courting a female who has gotten herself in with some local bad boys who also practice karate.
It follows a formula, but there is enough for anyone to enjoy here despite the endlessly quoted lines and karate moves.
