Review of The Karate Kid (1984) by Don A — 16 Jun 2010
Since the remake [which I havn't seen because it's a remake] came out, I thought I'd do a review of the original. This is the one that really started it all and made martial arts popular with the mainstream. I remember every kid wanted to have a 'Mr. Miyagi' as their mentor. But it was so much more than just that. It was really one of the first movies to seriously deal with an interracial mentorship, single parenthood, teenage isolation as well remaining sentiments from WWII, both from an White Middle class perspective as well as Japanese American perspective and the causalities on both sides; which granted may sound normal in our jaded society now, but 30 years ago, this was revolutionary. Awesome 80's soundtrack. So for that..this movie is getting a 5 Star rating.
Wax on..Wax off baby..
