Review of The Jungle Book (1967) by Philip S — 26 Apr 2011
What a way for Walt Disney to go out. The last film that Walt Disney ever had a hand in is also one of the finest that his company has ever crafted. As noted in the bonus features on the dvd, it obviously takes liberties with the original Rudyard Kipling story. But that aside, it's still one of the most enjoyable animated movies of all time. Whether it's the jazzy, toe-tapping tunes of "I Wanna Be Like You" or "The Bear Necessities", or the classic animation, or even the religious references, this story about friendship, family, and growing up is a movie that will be a family favorite for every generation past, present, and future.
The writing in the story takes obvious liberties with the original Kipling story. Despite that, its writers succeded in crafting a story that's both fun and thought provoking and fun at the same time. The opening sequence showing Mowgli floating down a river in a basket is a direct reference to the story of Moses. And whether or not it was intentional, the use of Kaa the snake could be interpreted as a biblical reference. These references are enough to help start a theological debate.
The potential discussions that could be raised are only one aspect that makes 'The Jungle Book' so enjoyable. As was noted in an interview for 'Snow White...', it's far too easy for animators to make "animated" movies today, thanks to technological advances. And while animators for the likes of 'The Jungle Book 2' may have more colors to work with doesn't make that movie any better. The animation style used in the original movie--as well as the other classic Disney movies--makes it better than what's out now. It could be equated to the static on an old time radio show, or classic jazz vinyl LP. If anything, doing what they did with what some animators may consider limited resources, makes the movie even better than what's in theaters and stores today.
Along with the beautiful animation style, fun songs, and enjoyable story, one other factor makes the dvd presenation impressive. the bonus features of the movie have been referenced already. In comparison to the bonus features presented on the dvd of the movie's sequel, the features included on the original are far more enjoyable. Among the best of the bonus features is the history behind the movie. The history lesson behind the movie shows just how much work went into bringing the movie to life.
'The Jungle Book' may have taken liberties with the original story, but it's so fun that it's no wonder it's still a family favorite so many years after its original release despite being adapted from a book. If anything that can be said against it, it's just sad that Disney has failed time and again since then, to make a movie of the same quality.
