Review of The Judge (2014) by Cameron J — 27 Jan 2015
The film is incredibly well made, with great cinematography, editing, and music, but not even the exceptional performances by Downey Jr. and Duvall can save this 2 and a half hour borefest from delving into oversentimental, unnecessary filler scenes.
Most subplots go unfinished and pretty much everything interesting (save a great scene during a storm) is in the trailer. Would've been way better as a TV show - so the characters could be fleshed out - or as a movie with an hour less of filler - with far less focus on the meaningless backing characters who attempt to add to the backdrop and create an idea of the small town setting, but don't have the small-town atmosphere to back up their importance, narratively or thematically.
