Review of The Judge (2014) by June F — 06 Feb 2015
One of the most cringe worthy films of the year. It tries so hard to be funny at times or sentimental but it just makes you cringe because they are trying to shove it down your throat. Speaking of shoving down your throat, Robert Downey Jr.
once again gives a "WATCH ME" performance that is overbearing and annoying and like I said about the script trying to hard to be funny, Downey plays on that cord too. Robert Duvall in some odd world has received major award nominations for this including the Oscar but I think it was a name check nomination because although he makes the film worth watching, it still isn't anything extraordinary.
Not even Vera Farmiga could save this movie. The person that does save the movie a little is Billy Bob Thornton and he makes the court room scenes a little more alive. Dax Shepard does the same thing except they made him do the same joke like 4 times.
Speaking of the court room, this movie seems like a high school theater production. Lots of screaming of "WATCH ME, I'M ACTING RIGHT NOW" and in the court room the loud gasps when plot twists are revealed.
It's almost comical. The case itself is not even all that complex or compelling to even care who did it and what the verdict is. This director did Wedding Crashers and I think he should stick to comedies.
The cinematography is so overblown to look like this film is in the 1960's with all the harsh light coming into the court room, the score is unnecessary at times or overly sentimental and so are the song choices of Bon Iver during a big gushy scene, and it just a big old mess.
