Review of The Judge (2014) by Adrian B — 27 Mar 2015
The Judge (2014).
If you come from a steady , relaxed family where everybody likes each other you might not wholly understand this movie.
But if going back home makes you uneasy , book your seat for "The Judge".
More a family drama than a thriller, the plot introduces us city lawyer Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Junior) on the way to his childhood home for the funeral of his mother.
Going back is not easy because of the difficult relationship with his father , Judge Palmer (Robert Duvall), an always disappointed old man that loves everybody but his own children.
Disdain for his middle son Hank is underlined at every opportunity but when the Judge is suspected for murder it will be his son's job to try and defend him in court.
Watching Robert Downey Junior is always a joy for me but I simply adore him whenever he is not playing Iron Man.
The role of a lawyer suits him perfectly (remember him in Ally McBeal?) because he speaks fast and is full of anger.
Robert Duvall needs no introduction, he is a fantastic actor , what's left of a different Hollywood generation.
There are lots of cliché here but it is very well acted and definitely worth it to watch, the movie takes its time, it does not rush and tells the whole story.
In one scene in particular, the one shot in the bathroom, something happens there because they are not acting...it's real life.
That's a gift you don't witness often in a movie: a gesture, a look, a sentence that for a second makes you believe that movies are for real.
My vote 8/10.
