Review of The Judge (2014) by Jaret M — 21 Jan 2015
This standardized blend of courtroom drama and family melodrama comes and goes in so many different directions, even its own check-point cliches become crisscrossed, playing out as though dictated from a text book.
However, the two leads are fantastic, explosive and unpredictable, and watching the Roberts Duvall and Downey spar with powder-keg chemistry is the true joy of the film. Its worth watching for that alone and its truly refreshing to watch Downey work outside of the special effects worlds of Marvel and Holmes, stretching his muscles and earning every moment.
Hopefully, next time, he won't have to work so hard to compensate for the film's mediocrity.
