Review of The Jewel of the Nile (1985) by Claire T — 14 Nov 2012
While it's certainly true that Robert Zemeckis' Romancing the Stone was the better flick of the two (with the same cast AND characters), The Jewel of the Nile has some amusing and telling moments.
Learning, however, that the cast (especially Kathleen Turner) was hesitant to do another film under pressure from 20th Century Fox is a bit disconcerting and makes me lose faith in the authenticity of the characters a little.
It's in the style of its slightly less financially successful but better regarded predecessor, but the history of film has proven that you can recreate what made the first great all you want: it becomes old fast (never delivering any REAL surprises) and doesn't always work as well.
