Review of The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones (1987) by Sol H — 09 Feb 2009
Would have been brilliant if it was 10 minutes long. The Flintstones and The Jetsons are both oh so dry that they often begin to outstay their welcome in half-hour TV slot format; a movie was doomed from the start really.
Yeah, there's a mild bit of novelty in seeing the Jetsons in Bedrock and the Flintstones in wherever the future-y place the Jetsons live is called, but beyond that (surprisingly mild) novelty, there's nothing really worth watching this for.
The animation is horrible (the same sort of quality of the show, but some how lacking in it's charm). The plot is all over the place. First the Jetsons go back in time to see the Flintstones, then they help them at some sporting games at a picnic, then the Flinstones accidentally end up in Jetson-land and enjoy the future-y life, whilst the Jetsons take over the role of the Flintstones in their world and get rich, then the Flinstones get rich and famous in the future simply for being cavemen. It goes on and on like this and ends up being about selling cars. It needed someone to reign it in, then force it through one of those things you put Play-doh through to turn it into a cube shape so someone could put it in a box and then coat the box in duct tape to keep it somewhat under control.
Basically, the film is bland and boring, and it's a shame. Although there was potential for it, there's zero scope. I know that both shows were very much traditional sitcoms of their day -just animated; but surely they could have thrown some epic dinosaur battles and volcanoes going off or space battles with laser beams and killer robots? It's a movie. Come on.
Personal enjoyment: 4/10.
Actual quality as a film: 3/10.
