The Jerk really is a stupid movie. It works both ways of course, because it allows the movie to be rather spontaneous and not have its audience question, "Well why is this happening?" Not much in the way of original story, this is more of a series of gags involving the alleged jerk, Steve Martin.
There are definitely some laughs to be found, but it's not going to change the face of cinema.
