Review of The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) by Fiona D — 29 Sep 2008
The preview made the movie look like it was going to be so much better than it actually is... I haven't read the book yet, but it's sitting in my library for the near future. On some forums, I've read that the movie is better than the book but I'm really hoping it's the reverse.
In any case, the movie felt like it only had clips of acting bc the stories were always interrupted with the month markers showing each person reading the designated book-of-the-month. Despite the segmented effect, my favorite character was Prudy (Emily Blunt). Even though she was the most repressed of the entire group, I felt like her character portrayed the greatest depth in her emotions as she wavered between restraint and release, between accepting things the way they are and reaching for more/better.
Though I wouldn't add this to the rewatch list, it made me want to start my own Jane Austen book club.
