Review of The Jacket (2005) by John M — 11 Jan 2009
Fascinating stuff. It's kind of hard to describe The Jacket without making it sound much more ludicrous than it actually is, but I'll give it a shot. It's about a soldier, Jack Starks, (Adrien Brody) who comes back to Vermont, where he, due to a misunderstood incident, winds up in a mental hospital.
In the hospital, they drug him up, put him in a straitjacket and stick him in a morgue drawer in attempt to cure him. In the morgue drawer, Jack inexplicably travels 15 years into the future, where he meets a girl that he met the same day of that misunderstood incident (Keira Knightley).
The Jacket has a very sleek look, with snappy editing and lots of extreme close-ups. It has a very original narrative structure, and there are not a whole lot of movies out there that you can say that about.
As absurd as the plot sounds, it works because you are willing to suspend your disbelief because it's taking place in a mental hospital. The acting and direction are equally great, and they combine to make one topnotch polished product.
Reminds me a little of one of my very favorite movies Memento.
