Review of The Jacket (2005) by Zack F — 25 Jun 2010

This movie's premise was certainly very intriguing, and the style of some emotional scenes got my attention, but the execution of this movie is too badly done for me to like it that much.

So basically they put Adrien Brody in a Mental Hospital because they think he shot a cop. They put him in a jacket and shove him in a compartment, and in it he travels to the year 2007 (Oh it's 1992 for him) where he meets Keira Knightley. This is the girl that he met when she was only little and now he convinces her of what's going on, and Brody needs to find out what's really happening. So that's the plot, it's really cool, and really original.

What failed about this movie was Keira Knightley. That had to be the worst American Accent I've ever heard in my entire life. She should have just been British...I wouldn't have asked any questions! I would have just gone along with it...but instead, we have her attempting to be american, and it just doesn't work out. Daniel Craig does the same thing, but at least his accent sounds a little more real. Adrien Brody gives a pretty gritty performance, and that's what I like to see. He did a good job.

What was also annoying was how contrived some things were, even though the plot was so original. Some of the things that Knightley said, were just so predictable. Anyway, it wasn't that big of a deal, but...it coincided with some ridiculous scenes that were supposed to be flashy and weird, but they just gave me a headache. I don't know...

I don't know what else to say. The plot was immensely original, intriguing, and entertaining, but some of the stupid execution brought the movie down. I liked the ending a lot too, it's just this movie wasn't good enough. It was as good as it could have been.
