Review of The Italian Job (2003) by Yash S — 20 Aug 2010
This has good photography and framing, supported by likeable actors and music. All the basic elements are in place, yet the thing is underwhelming. I think this is because the storytelling here is all about what happens in the present.
It does not generate enough suspense or doubt. This is the Kurosawa style of storytelling, and the best recent example of such narratives is the 'Ocean's Eleven' remake, which incidentally is also a heist film, and which I suppose was the model for this film, also a remake.
Unfortunately director F. Gary Grey does not quite match the Soderbergh level of craft.
