Review of The Italian Job (2003) by Brendan N — 05 Jan 2014
A nice remake that does not lift the entire plot of the old film. The filmmakers attempt something different and while it never finds new ground, it does have a lot of fun characters. Wahlberg might be the name but he is lucky to have Statham, Green, Theron and Def as companions for this film.
The central baddie is Norton and he is in typical form here, not great by any means but servicable for the film. Once the plot kicks into action you will have a a lot of fun here and I'm happy to say this film holds up, not like other heist films.
There are the usual cliches and beats but when the film is well directed and crafted, you can do very little not to be swept up into the film. I'm glad a planned sequel never eventualated as this is a one plot film and a sequel would not suit the structure, but I've been proven wrong before.
