Review of The Italian Job (1969) by Alexander J — 29 Jan 2008
A funny heist movie from Britain's golden era that will make oldtimer lovers cringe with horror. Forget about logic and/or realism, this film's supposed to be enjoyed for its British style and coolness factor and a humourous take on everything Italian - from an English perspective.
Everything Italian is inferior to GB in "The Italian Job" - women, men, cars. I still wonder how on Earth the makers got the license to shoot in Turin - just the chase sequence on top of ancient buildings and medieval churches and steps is a delicate matter.
Dialogue's flat and the Italian characters get an occasional dub, other times they continue speaking Italian. The editing is also weird at times. But at least now I know where "Knight Rider" got the idea from for their mobile HQ.
.. Has a few good laughs in it, but you'll probably find yourself shaking your head in disbelief, too.
