Review of The Italian (2005) by Ritchie S — 31 Aug 2007
A sweet little film about a 6 year old boy who was abandoned by his mother at birth; about to be adopted by an Italian couple, he believes that his mother can be found and sets out in search of her. Lovingly filmed it reveals a Russian's view of life in the contemporary Russia with bitter clarity.
The lost communists remembering past glory, the money grubbing arriviste class of new Russia and the forgotten children left to fend (very successfully) for themselves. The scenes in the orphanage are startling and poignant as the kids raise themselves because their minders are lost in the past.
It tips over into melodrama a touch at the end, all in all a fine film from Russia.
