It's an original idea and a somewhat chilling story. The movie is slow, yes, but I give it credit for all that's not apparent, for all the silent close-ups on Vanyia who tries to find a nonconformist solution in an enclosed and corrupted world.
Keep in mind too that Russian movie makers haven't attended George Lucas' screenwriting class...
