Review of The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) by Alyson C — 04 Mar 2007
Good gracious, what a mess... This movie isn't incredibly horrible, but it also isn't incredibly good. It's really quite sleep-inducing, and this is coming from someone who generally doesn't ever sleep through movies.
But I kind of felt compelled to see this, since I have a soft spot for 19th century sci-fi novels. I just hope the book is better. There's really nothing here that could hold my attention. David Thewlis makes a great protagonist, in my humble opinion, and even Fairuza Balk, who always seems to play unstable people, was likable.
Marlon Brando, on the other hand, was a mess. A white pasty obese mess. I miss Jor-El. He really rather let me down here. The whole thing let me down. Even the somewhat decent eye candy let me down. This just seemed to be a makeup experiment of "let's see how many different people-animals we can make" caught on tape.
The SFX aren't even really up to snuff given that this movie isn't really all that old. I'd consider seeing this again, maybe at a time when I didn't have a headache and a lot of homework to deal with.
But that will be a long time coming.
