Review of The Iron Lady (2011) by Sandy K — 01 Jun 2012
Perhaps Meryl Streepâ(TM)s amazing portrayal of Margaret Thatcher would be enough to make this a deeply satisfying film experience, but the blending of past and present is artfully done, as an elderly Thatcher remembers her life experiences through hallucinatory interactions with her deceased husband.
This is a portrait of a woman who manages to succeed in political leadership -- at a time still very hostile to women -- and remain true to her convictions through overwhelming pressure, making it impossible not to admire her accomplishments no matter what you think of her politics.
Jim Broadbent is delightful as the playful, supportive Denis Thatcher who accepts her completely for who she is. Itâ(TM)s their relationship that is really the heart of this story, beautifully conveyed by director Phyllida Lloyd.
