Review of The Iron Lady (2011) by Stephen C — 20 Jun 2012
In one word APALLING ,how could the film makers take one of this countrys most divisive figures and turn out something as boring and dull as this?
Yes Streep is good as Thatcher but the rest of the film is so hollow you come away knowing no more about the woman and her campaigns.
Key points in her career are fudged ,montaged or just plain ignored, its painful to watch as the director makes Thatcher look like Dr Strangelove in his war room when dealing with the Falklands.
And as for the miners strike ? Forget it one of the most bitter strikes of the 80s is barely mentioned as is the 3 million unemployed and the destruction of whole communties .
The film staggers from one scene to the next ,with only Streep coming away with any sort of performance as all the figures from her political life such as Michael Heseltine and Geoffrey Howe are potrayed as cretinous or vain buffons.
Oliver Stone made Nixon and while that maye be a flawed film its a downright masterpiece next to this pile of rubbish.a very very large missed oppurtunity and for someone who grew up under Thatcher a terrible piece of cod history that even a seven year old could have made a better film about.
