Review of The Iron Lady (2011) by Michelle W — 05 Jul 2012
It's the summer and I have copious amounts of free time...which translates to being able to watch all those Oscar nominated films that I missed months ago.
Meryl Streep is the star of the Iron Lady, so of course the film features excellent acting. I didn't recognize any other prominent actors in the film, but there is no one who stood out as being ineffective in his/her role.
I liked that the movie gave audience members a background into the political events of the 1980s with actual news footage clips.
In terms of sequence, the film traces Thatcher's teenage years, "rise to the top," and eventual resignation. The film was done in flashbacks and I think the director used that technique to symbolize the chaos of Thatcher's current dementia. While the flashback technique seemed like an effective way to film the movie, I felt that the technique was annoying.
I can't pinpoint precisely what the film was missing, but at the end of viewing it, all I could think was, "Meh.".
