Review of The Iron Lady (2011) by Mike C — 09 Sep 2012
Excellent method acting from Meryl Streep fails to save a movie from being anything more than a curiosity. I don't have any respect for Thatcher but the decision to guess at her current wellbeing is questionable before she has actually kicked the bucket and the narrative plays fast and loose with time scale for dramatic effect - the miners' strike is transposed to a period before the Falklands War for instance.
Major figures are also omitted (Tebbit for instance) - presumably because they couldn't get decent lookeylikeys - although Jim Broadbent deserves credit for portraying Dennis Thatcher as a bit of a buffoon rather than the whole hog of reality.
No mention of appeasement of racist South Africa and numerous other crimes. #nostatefuneral.
