I saw this years ago as a kid as liked it, but I had forgotten so much about it. Glad I spent a short amount of time to re-watch this classic. The characters including the bi-polar Iron Giant himself are all wonderful and the story is great.
I love how the ending actually makes sense and isn't just a cheap cop-out to go all Norman Rockwell on us.
