Review of The Iron Giant (1999) by Ian G — 17 Dec 2011
One of the last great classic animated films before computer animation started dominating the box office gates, and features a very strong directorial debut for now legendary Pixar vet Brad Bird (Incredibles, Rataouille and the now released Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol).
A very cool film that wears its childlike innocence on its sleeve and wears it well. The casting is very well done here especially with Vin Diesl as the robot which is a great pairing. The ever present 50's style/story permutations is present throughout including the big brother government chasing the robot, 50's propaganda ads and the inclusion of Frankie and Ollie's character which is a tribute to two of the 9 old men animators from the classic Disney studio that had a huge influence on the current generation of animation filmmakers today.
An enjoyable ride and makes you feel like a kid again.
