Review of The Iron Giant (1999) by Jackson W — 07 Aug 2013
I saw this film as a kid a couple of times, and I think what I remember most is the visuals, which are really uniquely spectacular. It's a movie that stays in its own bubble for a non-Disney movie.
It doesnt try to usher in the new gimmick of computer animation nor does it try to do everything Disney did before it. Heck, the only probable reason people dont talk about it much today is because its not from Disney.
But I digress, it's still a complete masterpiece for what it is. The characters are all memorable, the dialogue is near perfect, and never really do you know where the story is going throughout, unless you're an expert on film.
The only part I didn't like so much is the whole "guns kill, you dont have to be a gun" part which felt to me like it had a double meaning delving into politics that didnt really belong here.
It's still one of the greatest usage of your time for animation and its so mature that it would probably work for live action as well. The plot is sort of similar to the latter Lilo and Stitch, but this works much better.
It's mature, it's adult, it's funny, it's practically what it means to be a movie made for general audiences.
