While Bond was starting to concede grit for quick fire surface frills with Thunderball, Len Deighton's "anti-hero" Harry Palmer found his soul mate in the unassuming guise of Michael Caine.
The Bond binary opposition is admittedly on the wrong side of cliched more than 40 years later, accepting that Deighton and Furie's insubordinate imp is more than a match for the renegade golden boy of MI5.
Guy Doleman acts as God to the fallen angel Nigel Green, with Caine's glib messenger boy somewhere in the middle, smart mouthed to the bitter end. Rule Britannia as they say in the Home Office...
