Review of The Ipcress File (1965) by Steve W — 31 May 2010
Released in the mid-60s when spy movies were going the 007 splashy, hi-tech, non-stop action way, The Ipcress File, with Caine as Harry Palmer, could be considered the "anti-James Bond", and in a good way.
This film, with Palmer out to discover who is responsible for kidnapping and brainwashing top British scientists, goes for suspense and intrigue rather than over-the-top unbelievable action, which keeps you guessing over who the double agent is working against Palmer.
The result is a far more realistic and much better spy flick, based on quality acting and suspense rather than unrealistic action and spills. Gimme Harry Palmer any day over James Bond.
