Review of The Invitation (2022) by Compi24 — 13 Sep 2022
Another clear case of a film's trailer almost completely tanking its watchability. In portraying the "Crimson Peak" meets "Ready Or Not" angle on a little too thick, "The Invitation's" marketing ultimately forces its biggest twist out into the light of day.
Turns out that the twist in question occurs a little bit later in the film than you would think, rendering the first half into this glacial slog towards an obligatory moment we already know is coming.
Even with the poor marketing notwithstanding, this still feels like YA-fiction-inspired tedium to me. From the hackneyed romance, to the tropey characters and predictability — this is all far from ideal entertainment to me.
At least the third act has the decency to be occasionally hilarious. Some of the principal cast is actually really trying here, which is to be commended. Other than that, though, I really, really cannot recommend a watch.
