Review of The Invitation (2016) by Nell A — 23 Nov 2016
The first hour really did not impress me at all. The acting had some seriously weak moments at the start, and the tension and awkwardness were so strong that it simply wasn't plausible that any of the people in that room really wanted to be there in the first place, let alone stay there after some of the odd occurrences.
I mean really, you don't have to be a doomsday prepper to acknowledge you're in a really weird situation and it simply isn't worth the risk of staying in it. On top of that, as much as the film tries to leave you guessing what is real, it is really obvious how this is going to end - it's just a matter of WHEN.
That said, once all hell breaks loose it is heartbreaking, scary and really good. That tedious first hour DOES end up paying off once the story takes off and it leaves you more emotional than you had expected to be.
Definitely worth a watch.
