Review of The Invitation (2016) by Mickmac — 07 Apr 2016
I must say I'm surprised by the raft of positive reviews. For me, the film never achieved lift-off. Characters are threadbare, dialogue is wholly unrealistic, the world of the film is both physically and narratively claustrophobic.
It shows that the film was shot in only 20 days. Direction misses so many opportunities, and when the film finally reaches its climax, it evokes little in the way of emotion or excitement, because the camera-work rarely succeeds in telling the story.
I failed to care about the characters and the lead's past difficulty, and once the full premise is revealed... well, I couldn't go there. Suspense is in short supply, as is any character development.
In short, I just didn't enjoy it.
