Review of The Invitation (2016) by Lovro H — 09 Apr 2016
This was amazing. The Invitation follows a man, Will, and his girlfriend, Kira. They're on their way to a wedding party hosted by Will's ex-wife who hasn't been seen by anybody for 2 years.
Will is very skeptical about the party as he heard nothing from his ex-wife for 2 years and now all of a sudden he gets an invitation for her wedding party! I will not spoil anything more, but I will say that the reason behind it is truly diabolical.
The acting in the movie is excellent! Everyone does a great job and each character is very well developed and feels like a real person, which, in movies like this, is very important. There's this sense of mystery and secret in Will's ex-wife, her new husband and their 'friends' which I really loved and the movie kept making me guess what the reason behind the whole wedding party/dinner was.
It's been a while since I was this curious about the movie's outcome and the outcome is brilliant! For once, the payoff is fantastic and can really shock a viewer! The direction of the movie is very impressive considering how the entire movie is in one house.
But, there is one issue with that, as well. There are a few scenes in the movie where characters go from one room to the other, but you never see how they go from that first place, to the next, it's a bit confusing at times as in one scene a guy could be in the bathroom and then it cuts to him being at the dinner table.
It's not a big problem, but it's just something I've noticed that messed with my mind a little bit. The sound effects and the sound design is superb! It's very fitting and really adds to the atmosphere of the movie.
I especially loved the audio in once scene near the ending which I will not spoil, but you'll know which scene it is once you see the movie. The ending of the movie is, as I've said, shocking and unpredictable, but also leaves a few things unexplained that I would've liked to see explained.
All in all, this is a fantastic movie with great acting, amazing soundtrack, a beautiful look to it and a gripping and highly intense story which will leave you speechless once you finish the movie. I would highly recommend this movie to everyone who just wants to see a great movie, and I can safely say that this is now one of my most favourite movies, next to Enemy.
