Review of The Invitation (2016) by Jonathan D — 18 Jul 2016
This is a psychological thriller which builds its suspense on the question of just whether or not something nefarious is about to spring. Will and his date are invited to a reunion in the Hollywood Hills, and the party is starting to get a little creepy...
It's a nifty idea and there are some good payoffs, but the "slow" building of tension really is too slow, Clues get added, and then dropped without a strong game plan. Most damaging is Logan Marshall-Green as Will, who spends a whole lot of the movie looking as though he forgot he's on camera and is waiting for his call, or else blowing up in ridiculous paranoia.
Even so, there is enough here that is out of the ordinary that this can be worth catching if you like odd psychological movies. The closest thing that comes to mind is "The Comfort of Strangers.".
