Review of The Invitation (2016) by David M — 15 Oct 2016
A dinner party gone wrong movie that isn't quite as good as last year's "Coherence" is still a strong showing by first time director Kusama. Will and his new girlfriend are invited to a reunion dinner party of old friends, hosted by his ex-wife with whom they lost a child together.
The group fell apart after the tragedy several years ago, and is now coming at his ex's request. Things are immediately off which leads to the obvious pitfall of "why doesn't everyone just leave?" problem of dinner party movies.
Coupled with the mechanical pairing off of Will and every character at the dinner party to discuss the past or his behavior this night, it wavers at times but is bolstered by the creepy cult nature of ex-wife Eden, her new husband, and their strange new friend.
The creepy punctuations keep things interesting until the lid is finally blown off for a fun third act which leaves with just enough questions to make it interesting.
