Review of The Invisible Woman (2013) by Derek S — 18 May 2014
It pains me to review this film. I might be one of Ralph Fiennes #1 fans, but he blew it here, at least as a director (his debut). I'm also a big fan of Dickens, so I thought this would be an interesting film. Unfortunately, I don't recommend it. I'm really glad I didn't spend money to see it in the theater and just borrowed the DVD from my library.
It's what I would call a biographical snippet period drama. Period dramas and biographies on film can be rather dry and slow. But I think maybe this "snippet" was just not appealing. The story is that Dickens was married, had a bunch of kids, was a great dad when he was at home and mostly a rock star in public. Lots of adoring fans. He also developed a romantic relationship with this girl, Nelly, an actress because he wasn't fond of his wife any longer. Okay--but really, we are supposed to be interested in that? It sounded good on the surface and being a fan of the star, I thought it might be a good movie, but I found myself incredibly bored by the whole thing.
The good is the costume and scenery. Some of the dialogue is good. The accurate (?) portrayal of the times is also notable.
I welcome contrary opinions!
