Review of The Invention of Lying (2009) by Bradford D — 01 Apr 2011
The Invention of Lying This starts off with some laugh-out-loud bits like the bus sign that reads "Pepsi: for when they don't serve Coke". A few minutes of everyone saying exactly what they think is a refreshingly humorous skit.
But then you realize that there are still 70 minutes left in this 99 minute movie, and it dawns on you that Ricky Gervais doesn't have any more to say. His inference that God and all religion is a lie is so weakly presented that it lacks the teeth to present a daring viewpoint.
It felt like he was trying to slip it in quietly so as not to offend too many people. So...insert romantic comedy template number #6 and let's just coast until the predictable and inevitable conclusion.
I am so bored with movies that are made based on a 60 second pitch to some marketing manager. This is only watchable by the most superficial of viewers.
