Review of The Invention of Lying (2009) by Philip Z — 03 Oct 2013
I wasn't so sure I was going to like this film - there's a lot of unpleasantness to the humor, but it's mostly on Ricky Gervais (which probably means he has a stronger sense of himself than I do about myself).
For example, it actually hurt watching Jennifer Garner list the reasons why she's not interested in Ricky Gervais. Sure, her character was just being honest, but it felt like one of my own personal nightmares come true.
It felt like she was saying all of these things to my face about me. This means only one thing, I was empathizing and sympathizing with Ricky Gervais. The rest of the movie details Gervais' adventures in learning that he has the ability to lie in a world that can only tell the truth.
And, while I don't agree with its approach to theology, I think this movie is a solid effort and in the right moments it's hilarious.
