It is usually easier for a director to play with the sensibility of the audience when dealing with serious and delicate topics such as this one. However the whole movie deals with it in a great way and adds an unusual touch of happiness.
The result is awesome and moreover is based on a real story. Movies like this one make me believe that the humankind is not that bad sometimes.
