Review of The Intouchables (2011) by Tibor B — 29 Jul 2013
This slick and breezy French drama, was a big commercial hit, despite some strong criticism for crude racial stereotyping. It's true, the story is a bit naive and simplified but I think the really strong arguments condemning the film are a little over-serious.
I found the actors transcended the slightly simplified roles, with both Cluzet and Sy very charming as the rich disabled white man, and the unlikely, underqualified young, cheeky caretaker he takes a risk to hire.
Some of the running gags get a little tiresome, and it's occasionally a bit too feel-good for its own good in places. But the chemistry between the two, and the supporting players as well, is great and redeems some of the stories oversimplified cliches.
