Review of The Interview (2014) by Bill M — 16 Feb 2015
Here it is at last, the most controversial, shit storm causing movie of all time, although that has more to do with the internet hacking/terrorist threatening furor surrounding it than the movie itself, which is just a very funny, very silly, very large amount of pure fun.
This isn't pointed satire (although it takes some timely jabs at shlocky modern tabloids and news) this isnt a Dr Strangelove or Team America, even if it is on many levels more important than both as a symbol of freedom of speech and every persons God given right to go see a silly movie where Kim Jong Un sharts and Seth Rogen has to stick an oversized device up his arse for concealment.
What we really have here as an actual movie and not a media storm, is this generations Spies Like Us (although considerably better than that movie) an hilarious (bar the slightly draggy middle section) blackly comic, violent, extremely lowbrow good time that deserved the chance to get to more audiences in need of a bad taste laugh, alas it will always be overshadowed by what surrounds it, even though that very circus might be what ultimately gets more people to want to watch it and for it to be remembered past it's sell by date.
Exercise your basic right and go watch The Interview, if just to say a big fuck you to terrorists, and oppressive forces/censors of the world trying to silence those in the free speaking world, especially after Charlie Hebodo, sure Seth Rogens previous writing/acting/directing gig, the demented comic masterwork "This Is The End" is easily the better film, but as I said, this is now more important.
