Review of The Interview (2014) by Kierstyn R — 03 May 2015
The film, "The Interview," is a movie that has caused much drama for a hilarious movie. This movie, which is one of my favorites, was released at the end of 2014 which was directed by both Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen. The screenplay writer was Dan Sterling and the storywriters were all three of them: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, and Dan Sterling. This movie would not have turned out the way it did without the help of the major actors who are Seth Rogen, James Franco, Randall Park, and Lizzy Caplan. The funniness and pure enjoyment of this film is what pulled me into watching it over and over again and will continuously do so. In my opinion, I have not had a movie make me laugh this hard in a while. There is no better movie and actors that could pull something like this off like Seth Rogan and James Franco otherwise it would probably be boring. "The Interview," which is an excellent comedy movie, was only released in a few theaters but was also released online, Netflix, and on demand. It was only meant to give entertainment to those who enjoy comedies but because of an event that is supposed to occur in the movie involving Kim Jong-un, it caused major issues between North Korea and the United States.
Dave Skylark (James Franco) and Aaron Rapaport (Seth Rogen) run a celebrity talk show called "Skylark Tonight." While one day, they hear that Dave has a huge fan who happens to be the dictator of North Korea. Since they wanted to try to prove their professionalism, they scored an interview with Kim Jong-un. There has been issues between the US and North Korea which is why everyone does not support their interview and also think that it is not a good idea to go through with the meet. However, the CIA does support their decision to meet with Kim and gives Dave and Aaron a mission. Though the two actors in this film do not seem like the most dependable people to give a mission too, the CIA still gives them strips of poison to kill Kim while they are in Pyongyang.
The film stood out as a comedy. Though there are some who may find it as a harsh film since it involves an assassination, it was not meant to be harmful. Seeing it as a viewer, this movie gives us pure entertainment into Dave and Aaron's adventures through this whole process. They even gave us a look at the soft side of Kim in the movie. "The Interview" also gave us an outlook of what is happening in reality when North Korea was very angry with this film. It showed the political aspect on what is actually going on between the United States and North Korea.
Seth Rogen is known to have simple movies meaning that he usually has simple plots and just wants to make them enjoyable to watch by adding a lot of jokes to them. This certain film was exactly what he aims to do which is to entertain us and keep us interested in the movie. The genre, comedy, was felt throughout the whole movie from the start to the end. The way that they added random things into serious moments to make us laugh really attracted my attention more.
During the film, the way they set up with all the formal techniques really brought the whole piece together. From the different types of scenes to the editing is what brings the entertainment going. Two special effects that were used in this film were the tigers while they were in North Korea and at the end when the helicopter blew up. Casting James Franco as the main character was a good choice because he has played in many different types of movies and he was capable of keeping the film interesting. Throughout the movie, they directed it perfectly because it kept up the tension of what would happen next while keeping us on the edge of our seats laughing.
The thematic content of this film is really what is going on between two countries. Even though this movie was based on a comedy, it also points out the events between the United States and North Korea. The movie is not exactly what is going on but it shows that there is an issue between us and it even showed when no one felt safe going to see the movie in theaters because of North Korea's threats.
This rated R film, 112 minutes long, never had a dull moment. The way that they laid the movie out from scene to scene kept the entertainment going. We can see why North Korea and others may be mad about this movie but we can also see the comedy behind it all. The movie flowed well with the scenes and dialogue and kept viewers wanting to see what would happen next. This comedy is one for the books and definitely recommended for all to see. Not only was it simple, but it brought laughter to a lot of people and myself. The directors and actors involved in this film made everything flow and work easily together. It is definitely worth seeing if you enjoy comedy and action movies, especially now that it is online, Netflix, and on demand.
