Review of The Interview (2014) by Kriebelr — 26 Dec 2014
If it weren't for the hacking controversy surrounding this film, it would just be a blip on the radar of averagely funny comedies that come down the pipeline. But thanks to those hackers, a movie that I would otherwise either not have seen or just put on as background noise while I did other work became the center of attention for me and my entire family (young children excluded) for two hours. I'm so glad Sony decided to release this on YouTube. It was completely worth the $6 bucks (not worth the cost of a family's night out at the movies though.).
Why was it funny? Because it rings true on so many different points. Depictions of things like North Korean grocery stores, dictator anatomy, KJU charming and manipulating Americans (think Dennis Rodman)...you see it on screen and think - that's ridiculous. But it's not. It's more true than most people realize.
This is a risky comedy, and that's where comedy thrives, in my opinion. The abundance of laughs out weigh the negatives in this film. One of those negatives is James Franco overacting the buffoon TV personality a bit. And some people will balk at the amount of butt humor. Whateves.
