Review of The Interpreter (2005) by Steph O — 18 Jul 2010
The best thing about this movie was Sean Penn's performance. He was fantastic as a Secret Service agent who's trying to do his job while coping with a very recent personal tragedy. The second-best thing about this movie was the U.
N. This is the first commercial film that was shot inside the U.N. headquarters in New York. It's an amazing location and adds a great deal of believability to the action. It helps the production values immensely.
The biggest problem with this movie is the story. The whole plot hinges on a very improbable event: Nicole Kidman's interpreter character just happening to overhear a conversation in an obscure African language that she grew up speaking, a conversation about a possible assassination attempt against a visiting head of state.
The chain of coincidences is hard to swallow, but if you can accept that premise, then the movie competently follows it through to its conclusion.
