Review of The International (2009) by Kenneth L — 05 Jun 2010
The movie has a couple of great moments and an interesting ending, but is otherwise a bit dull. There is a good assassination scene, and a great shoot-out set in the Guggenheim museum (it briefly reminded me of another, much more fun, Clive Owen movie called Shoot 'Em Up).
The rest is just people talking about this giant evil bank. Clive Owen is playing the same sort of character we are used to him playing: a tough, sad, but oh-so-rugged hero. The movie's poster has Naomi Watts on it, but don't be fooled: her performance is nothing special and her character hardly matters.
I can easily imagine that the first draft of the screenplay just had Owen's character, and that they added Watts's character in as an afterthought just so they could say the movie starred a woman.
The cinematography is competent, but lacks flair; the same can be said of Tom Tykwer's direction. *Spoiler alert* The ending is interesting in that it demonstrates that nothing the main character has done in the movie has actually mattered all that much.
The evil bank goes about its business much as it would have if he had not done anything. I liked this ending because it is far more realistic than if this one guy had somehow managed to take down a giant corporation.
