Review of The International (2009) by Matthew K — 03 Dec 2009
I enjoy Tom Tykwer (who did Run Lola Run, which rocked) and his visual style, but this film felt more like an elongated episode of CSI, but prettier.
If you're one for interesting locales, then you might want to give The International a shot, as the cinematography is gorgeous. The globe trotting mystery is sadly unrealized with a rather dull execution. The locations are all pretty, but you never get the sense of need to be there.
The story is an interesting idea but it isn't wholly fleshed out. It really feels thrown together with a "ok, this is a cool idea" but it never expands it and makes it incredibly unique like it could have been.
Anyway, if you were planning on seeing this movie because its marked under the "action" category, forget it. There's one action scene in the entire film. Of course it is one of the best gunplay scenes ever, but if that's all you really want to see just look it up on Youtube then.
To sum it up, The International is a slow moving, dull conspiracy flick that had loads of potential and one freaking incredibly gun fight.
