Review of The Intern (2010) by Orlando O — 28 Feb 2016
The Intern is that sentimental comedy drama film that tries to have that heartwarming, feel good outlook as the characters are going through some career challenges. When it comes to these types of films, they can be predictable. Very predictable, that when watching these characters going through some struggles with their career and their personal lives. It is easily foreshadowed that everything will be okay in the end.
The film starts with a 70 year old widower Ben (Robert De Niro), who is always trying to keep himself busy in retirement. He applies to a senior intern at an online fashion company, who the CEO is Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway). Jules is an every day busy businesswoman, she is always focused on her work, and tidy when it comes to planning, and having everything done the way she wants it too. Jules is also trying to maintain her personal life with her daughter and husband Matt. Her husband takes on the role of a stay home daddy, taking the daughter and participating in all the events with her at school. Ben assist Jules in her every day work by driving her around, giving advice, and life experience lessons, and also trying to help her out with her daughter. When Jules is coming across a breaking point of wanting another CEO to take charge of her company that she started.
Jules struggles can be predictable, and the film easily shows that every challenge she is going through will easily be handled. Ben is like that magical person that shows up, does the entire handy errand work to keep everyone on track. Sort of like a Mary Poppins ideal person. Jules personal life that she rarely has with her husband and daughter does open the room that her marriage is not exactly healthy. When her husband is having an affair, as Jules is almost non existent. Jules is under pressure, the challenges are not really much of a struggle when solutions were easily given. Making the ending of her accomplishment with deciding the fate of her career and personal life less awarding than it should. Anne Hathaway and Rober De Niro were both charming and decent with their performances.
