Review of The Intern (2010) by Tasha D — 21 Jan 2016
I had high hopes for this movie but it kinda let me down. The movie really doesn't establish much of a dramatic arc for Deniro's character-he's unhappy and then he becomes an intern and becomes almost imediatly happy, that's about the gist of it. Rather than the idea that both generations have a lot to teach each other, Meyers seems to think that it's a one way street, with the old sage guy handing down advice to a thirty something employee. This does not make for a very engaging picture, especially since Deniro's character is supposed to be the main character.
The movie also really can't decide who's Hatthaway's character should be, we meet her as a quirky boss who rides a bike within her office and accidently gives her phone number to a disgruntles client. but at the same time the movie also wants to make her inspire fear in employees similar to how Meryl Streep did in The Devil Wears Prada and the movie can not make these elements work in tandem.
It's not all bad, the tech comany seems like a fun place and you do want to hang around these characters, but from a story telling perspective it's really weak, which makes the film seem overly long.
