Review of The Intern (2010) by Carrie G — 26 Aug 2016
Didn't know what to expect from this movie but I knew with Robert Di Niro and Anne Hathaway in it the movie had to be funny at least. It was and it was every other emotion too.
Being older and having lost his wife he was able to be a mentor to all the younger male inters as well as others in the office. There was a line of the movie that stuck with me and rings true. I'm not good at quoting but it was something like this. When did men stop being men and remain little boys? We stopped calling women girls but why did we stop using the word gentlemen? Then she looks at the 3 guys that are also interns as well as Ben (Di Niro) and they are dressed in casual rather sloppy clothes and he is wearing a suit and tie. Looks very nice IMO and I have to agree with her. That MEN are a dying breed and they're being replaced by boys. She wasn't making a feminist statement, it's that at all. Women WANT MEN, we don't want 40 year old boys who still dress like they're in college and play video games! So I loved that she and Ben had become friends not just work colleagues. That was my favorite thing about this movie and probably why I enjoyed it so much. He may be retired but he still has a life and a purpose. People NEED him.
I really liked they showed that senior adults still have very active social lives after they retire because SO MANY in my generation seem to think once you hit a certain age, everything I guess just stops? Had this exact discussion with a 41YO guy from high school just a few weeks ago and was floored by his ignorance because he's actually rather intelligent. Book smart not common sense smart. He wasn't the first to make such an asinine statement.
Having been my MIL caregiver this movie reminded me of her and my Mammaw because they both had more active social lives in their late 60s than I did in my late 30s! The reason is they were single and I'm married so I don't go out with a different man to a dance or movie or dinner. LOVED that Ben took his first date to a FUNERAL! I died laughing when he gave the lady chasing him the "I'm sorry" look!
